About Heard Island and McDonald Island
The Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands is an
Australian external territory comprising a volcanic group of mostly
barren Antarctic islands, about two-thirds of the way from Madagascar to
Antarctica. The group's overall land area is 372 km² and it has 101.9
km of coastline.
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are uninhabited by humans, serving as a remote, pristine environment primarily used for scientific
research and wildlife conservation, managed by the Australian government.
The birds of Heard Island and McDonald Islands, are almost all seabirds which find their food at sea in the waters of the surrounding Southern Ocean. And Heard Island in particular is an important breeding site for macaroni, eastern rockhopper, gentoo and king penguins.
